Market coverage is usually written for people who trade. This desk is written for people who run things. A business owner rarely needs to know why a stock moved two percent before lunch. They do need to know why their line of credit costs more than it did last year, why freight quotes changed, and whether the next jobs report is likely to shift what customers spend.

So the dashboard below is arranged around those questions. Indices give the broad mood. Bond yields, especially the two-year and ten-year Treasury, are the best single signal of where borrowing costs are heading. Commodities such as crude oil and gold feed into fuel, materials and the general sense of risk. The economic calendar shows which releases are coming, so you can anticipate rather than react.

How to read the dashboard

Rates first. If the two-year yield is climbing, markets expect short-term rates to stay higher, which tends to flow through to variable-rate loans and equipment financing.

Oil and the dollar. Fuel and imported goods are where most small businesses feel commodity moves. A stronger dollar generally makes imports cheaper and exports harder.

The calendar. Inflation readings, jobs reports and central bank meetings are the scheduled events most likely to move rates.
