Most business journalism is written for people who own shares in companies. This desk is written
for people who own companies — a meaningfully different audience with meaningfully different
questions.
A quarterly earnings miss at a listed multinational is interesting if you hold the stock. If you
run a twelve-person firm, the useful version of that story is what it signals about the conditions
you are about to operate in: whether credit is tightening, whether your customers are deferring
purchases, whether the input costs you cannot control are moving.
How we approach it
Macro, translated. We cover rates, inflation and credit conditions in terms of
their consequences for operating businesses rather than for asset allocation.
The operating layer. Pricing, margin, cash conversion, hiring. The things that
determine whether a business survives a difficult year, which are rarely the things that determine
a headline.
Sector specificity. Home services, trades, professional services and
small-to-mid ecommerce get more attention here than their share of market capitalization would
justify, because they get less attention elsewhere than their share of employment would justify.
Live headline modules below carry market and wire coverage from established newsrooms. Our own
reporting sits above them and is clearly ours.
